New Trash and Recycling Carts

Why am I receiving new carts?

Why am I receiving new carts?

New statewide regulations require a transition to trash containers that are dark gray or black and recycle containers that are blue. Your green organics cart for food scraps/food-soiled paper and yard waste will remain the same.

What do I do with the old carts?

What do I do with the old carts?

On your service day, after your old carts are serviced, leave the empty burgundy trash and gray recycling carts out at the curb. Another truck will come by and remove them. Keep your green organics cart, as that will not be replaced. If you received new carts the day before your service day, only set out the old burgundy trash and gray recycling cart along with your green organics cart out as usual for service, and then leave the old trash and recycling carts out at the curb for removal. We will only service one set of carts. Please see reverse side for a reminder of what materials belong in which cart.

Single Stream Recycling

Single Stream recycling simplifies recycling because all recyclable materials are mixed together in one container. Single Stream recycling is so easy, the number of people who recycle increases; therefore, the pounds of recycled materials collected also increases. Service fees for curbside recycling collection is included in your Waste Management bill.

For more information about single stream recycling, please call Tri-CED Community Recycling at (510) 537-9963.

Curbside Household Battery and Cell Phone Recycling

Batteries are considered hazardous because of the metals and/or other toxic or corrosive materials contained within. For this reason, all batteries must be recycled, or taken to a household hazardous waste disposal facility, a universal waste handler, or an authorized recycling facility. Used batteries have enough remaining voltage to cause a fire, leak or explosion if not handled properly. Never burn or dispose f batteries in the trash. Please call the Alameda County Household Hazardous Waste Program at (800) 606-6606 for more information on disposal of batteries and other household hazardous waste.

Surcharges Begin July 1, 2023

Our goal is to help customers avoid surcharges and recycle more material. However, on July 1, 2023, surcharges will be implemented when contamination and overfilled carts are found. These surcharges help offset costs associated with processing and disposing contaminated materials.

Single Family Homes Surcharges per incident (after two warnings):

  • Contaminated Recycling/Organics Carts = $25.00
  • Overfilled Trash Carts = $10.00
