Attention: New Compost and Recycling Law

Effective January 1, 2022, a new California state law (SB 1383) requires that compostable materials be kept out of landfills—including food scraps, paper, cardboard, and yard trimmings—to prevent the production of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. In Alameda County the law is implemented under the StopWaste Organics Reduction and Recycling Ordinance and Union City Municipal Code Chapter 7.24.

Owners/managers of multifamily properties with five or more units must subscribe to compost/organics and recycling collection service, set up color-coded and labeled bins in common areas, ensure proper sorting, and educate tenants about the law at least annually and during move-in and move-out.

  • Contact Tri-CED Community Recycling at 510-429-8030 or Republic Services at 510-657-3500 to subscribe to compost/organics and recycling collection service. They also have experts on hand to provide you with free technical assistance to implement new recycling programs, determine the optimal collection service level for your site, and potentially achieve cost savings.
