Prohibited Items Fee Program
Recycling plays a critical role in reducing waste and preserving our environment. Recycling properly is required by California law (SB 1383) and helps keep our environment clean, cuts down on pollution, conserves natural resources, and benefits our economy. Please sort recyclable, compostable, and landfill items into the proper cart.
How to Be a Successful Recycler
- Know which items are recyclable in Union City.
- Keep recyclable items clean, dry, and empty. Do not bag items.
- Learn what is accepted in the recycle, compost, and landfill collection program by visiting UnionCityRecycles.org.
Why is proper sorting important?
Prohibited items such as plastic bags, diapers and Styrofoam degrades the quality of recyclables. When prohibited items are placed in the Recycle cart, it can cause recyclable materials that would have otherwise been recovered to be sent to the landfill. Furthermore, the additional effort required to remove prohibited items increases sorting and collection costs. The solution? Take care in sorting recyclable items into the Recycle cart, yard trimmings and food scraps into the Compost cart, and non‑recyclable and non‑compostable items into the Landfill cart.
Union City Prohibited Items Fee Program
To help clean up Union City’s recycle stream and comply with State and local regulations, the City of Union City, Republic Services and Tri-CED have implemented a Prohibited Items Fee program. Assessors will check Recycle carts in your neighborhood for prohibited items and leave an Oops tag on carts containing more than 10% or more of prohibited items.
What Do the Oops Tags Mean?
The Oops tag identifies which item(s) in the Recycle cart are prohibited. These items belong in Landfill or Compost cart.
- First Oops Tag – Identifies prohibited items in the Recycle cart. The cart will be serviced as usual.
- Second Oops Tag – Identifies prohibited items in the Recycle cart. The cart will be serviced as usual.
- Third Oops Tag – Identifies prohibited in the Recycle cart and serves as the final notification prior to the Prohibited Items Fee assessment. The cart will be serviced as usual.
- Fourth Oops Tag – Identifies prohibited items in the Recycle cart. Upon receipt of the fourth tag, the cart will be serviced as Landfill and a Prohibited Items Fee will be assessed.
- Subsequent Oops Tags – The Recycle cart will be serviced as Landfill and a Prohibited Items Fee will be assessed.
